Overview:

HowToPhotoShoot

Did you know that 93% of consumers consider visual appearance as the key deciding factor in purchasing decisions? That's why a meticulously planned photoshoot isn't just an expense—it's actually a revenue-generating investment.

Running a fashion brand isn't just about creating great products—it's about showcasing them in a way that turns heads and opens wallets. An expertly executed photo shoot can make the difference between a thriving brand and one that gets lost in the crowd.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through my tried-and-true process for planning and executing high-impact fashion photo shoots that not only look amazing but also drive real business results.

All Hands on Deck: Coordinating Team and Supplies

HowToPhotoShoot

When I’m heading out to a photoshoot, I pack up the clothes for both the spec ads and the main client; I get my iPad and I’m ready to go.

Next on the list is grabbing some food for the models to keep them happy during the shoot. I also pick up a couple more props like hockey sticks.

Photo Shoot Team Roster:
• A videographer to capture behind-the-scenes footage
• A photographer to take all primary product shots
• Multiple models to showcase the brand's clothing
• Shoot assistant (close friend)
• Shoot director/host (myself)

Location On Set

Staging: the process of selecting, designing, adapting to, or modifying the performance space for a play or film.

The most important shot in the shot list should be done first, then work your way down.

Spec Ads: non-commissioned commercials that can be sold directly to brands or used to get potential clients on other jobs. (definition)

Lookbook Template

HowToPhotoShoot

For a successful photo shoot, I recommend creating a lookbook template. This serves as a guide to establish the vibe and direction of the shoot, outlining what's needed in terms of photos and videos.

The lookbook helps everyone stay aligned. Photographers know what shots to capture, models understand the right hair and makeup styles, and stylists can follow the brand guidelines for the shoot.

My lookbook contains:

·         the photo shoot concept,

·         video examples,

·         inspirational content,

·         behind-the-scenes plans,

·         the shooting location,

·         goals,

·         talent details,

·         product information for e-commerce and,

·         logistics.

I will often create Pinterest boards to visually represent the shoot's desired aesthetic.

When a shoot has different vibes, I group them separately to maintain consistency.

Specific details surrounding clothing, makeup, and other relevant elements will also be included, keeping it simple for quick comprehension.

Video examples from various platforms can be added for the videographer's reference.

For marketing purposes, I plan behind-the-scenes content, focusing on high-production vertical videos optimized for social media.

My lookbook also includes scripting for behind-the-scenes content, location details, and images of the models.

I prefer using Peerspace for location scouting but networking and referrals can work too.

Finally, I list the deliverables for each shoot, team members with their Instagram profiles linked, and talent information, ensuring everyone can see each other's details. It helps to have the lookbook accessible to all team members. Additionally, e-commerce products are also displayed, helping models and the brand team understand the products better.

The Shot List: Managing a Successful Photo Shoot

A crucial part of the process is creating a detailed shot list, typically featuring 20-30 photos depending on the complexity of products and props.

The shot list includes columns for post descriptions, inspiration, props, models, e-commerce products, and the number of people in each shot.

I want to emphasize the importance of thinking in concepts rather than individual poses. It helps manage time efficiently during the shoot. Having the shot list on an iPad allows for real-time tracking and ensures all necessary shots are covered.

I also outline logistics, including address, time, parking details, and equipment requirements. The next step is organizing food and beverages for the team to maintain energy levels throughout the shoot.

For shorter shoots (three to four hours), continuous work is possible, but longer shoots with more team members may require scheduled breaks.

Wrap Up

Orchestrating a successful fashion brand photo shoot is an intricate dance of preparation and execution. Every detail counts, from the initial lookbook creation and Pinterest mood boards to the day-of checklist with hockey sticks and model snacks. Behind-the-scenes content captures the effort that goes into these productions, creating additional marketing opportunities. Ultimately, each element—from pre-shoot preparation to the final photographs—contributes to creating compelling visual assets that can boost brand awareness, engagement, and sales. For fashion entrepreneurs and growing retailers, mastering the art of the photo shoot isn't just about creating beautiful images—it's about crafting a strategic business tool that can help your brand break through the noise and capture the hearts and wallets of your target audience.
